Multi-Layer Tubes with “Green” Exterior
Bio-Polyamides
For the first time, Evonik Industries AG, Essen, Germany, is testing an outer layer of a bio-based polymer, Vestamid Terra, in its Lotus Exige racing car at the Hockenheimring. This is the first time that the material has been used for a multi-layer line for charge-air cooling in the racing car. The green section of the line has an outer layer of a bio-based polyamide.

Coolant line systems made of multi-layer tubes of the petroleum-based polymer that serve as lightweight replacements for rubber hoses and reinforced lines have been tested under racing conditions since 2007. Since then, the multi-layer tube (MLT) 8000 has become standard in vehicles worldwide. The racing car this season is using MLT 8000.3 with an orange outer layer. This system is about 870 g lighter than cooling line systems made with steel flex tubes, corresponding to a weight saving of more than 70 %. Coolant lines of the 8000 series have three layers: the inner layer consists of a polypropylene (PP) specially adapted for this application. On top of this is an adhesion-promoter layer, followed by the outer layer of the high-quality specialty polyamide or the bio-based version of the material.
